Chips for the Poor
Film, radio & Band / London, UK
Michael,Clare and Scott from Chips for the Poor have stepped off the “ride” to answer a few questions before sticking their noses back on the grindstone. Ben went AWOL for the Q&A.

What do you do for a living, on the side and for fun?
Michael) For a living: CLOSE-UP On the side: Resonance104.4fm For fun: walk in sunshine.

Clare) For a living - I make art documentaries. On the side - I get into trouble. For fun - I play in CFTP and try not to get into more trouble.

Scott) I make time drag for a living and for fun I dream of Fosbury flopping over a rainbow.

What are you working on at the moment?
M) The new Chips for the Poor release ‘Live From Downtown Transmissions’. It is a cassette compilation of our 9 part radio show for Resonance 104.4FM. Side A is the first 6 shows played simultaneously, and is a sort of sound collage, the story of our US tour and more. It's a journey... Side B has us playing with some of our favourite collaborators, James III, Design-a-Wave and Robin the Fog.

C) A documentary about a giant red squiggle in the sky.

S) My balance.

What do you like and dislike about what you do?
M) Like: the glory - dislike: the money.

C) I like that film is like an umbrella group of art. I can have fun with images, music, speech, sound. It all fits in. I dislike that, in order to be paid, I sometime shave to take on board someone else’s idea of what is beautiful.

S) I like entering dark tunnels but dislike the view.

Where did you grow up and how did this affect your life choices and aspirations?
M) Raleigh, Essex, it's just this place, you know?

C) I grew up in Newcastle. This made me super cool. It also made me aspire to not wear Geordie Jeans.

S) I grew up in the East Midlands. My first mistake was working in a plastics factory aged 16 as now my life goals are only about clocking in and out.

What's the best advice anyone's ever given you?
M) Prepare,observe, manoeuvre.

C) Never toast both sides of the bagel.

S) Many people have tried but more have failed. I am inadvisable. However, I suggest people start learning to make fire, for when the Internet dies you will be king.

What's your number one recommendation?
M) Restaurant: St John Bread and Wine, Spitalfields. Top to tail cooking, traditional English food, you get served by the chefs. We had the greatest plate of cabbage there.

C) Hot and sour soup at Huong Viet canteen in Dalston. The service is lacklustre but the soup is good.

S) Eat from bins cos we'll all be doing it in 5 years time. Stay ahead of the game.

Who do you want us to interview next?
M) Robin the Fog

C) Roy Wilkinson

S) Stuart Faulkner, as he paints fantastic pictures I can't help buying.
